Introduction
People who are not from North America or who live there tend to think of the US and Canada as a single, homogenous country with similar political and cultural systems. Just comparing the ecology of the US and Canada reveals a stark difference, with the US having a wider variety of temperatures and habitats. With permafrost in the north and milder temperatures along the US-Canada border, ice makes up a greater share of the Canadian terrain. The Mojave Desert in the Southwest of the United States and the Canadian tundra receive almost equal amounts of rainfall, but their temperatures are very different. Additionally, a greater percentage of the United States than Canada has a Mediterranean climate.
