Influence of Slavery on African Dance and Dance in America
Initially, the Blacks were forced to Dance as a form of exercise for them to look healthy while the Whites sold them in the market. Since they were set out on ships to be sold on another place, hence, keeping the weather in consideration, the Blacks were brought out on the ship decks and they were ripped off from their clothes, whipped and forced to dance.
Sometimes, music was played, music as in beating the drums with the hands, while sometimes they had to dance without any music. Initially it was something that they were bound to do, although the dance of the Blacks gradually turned into a tradition. Something deep rooted in their culture. As mentioned by Jaga et al., there rose different dance forms and each of them had significance of their own.
They compelled action resulted in dance being a tradition in their culture. Gradually, dance became something that they would do whenever there is something to celebrate although the negative portion being that the action is associated with a memory, which is tremendously bad, and thus associating such a memory, with all kinds of cultural celebration seems really strange.
