Some may also consider Twitter as a, “great place for keeping people informed on what you are up to without the need to spend a lot of time crafting an entire post on the subject” (Nations, 2019). Twitter was created in March 2006 by four successful entrepreneurs: Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams. Twitter started when Co-founder, Jack Dorsey proposed an idea of Twitter being a SMS-based platform. Later that year, the innovative leaders launched Twitter, where the platform immediately increased popularity globally. According to Gil (2019), “Some people use Twitter to discover interesting people and companies online, opting to follow their tweets”. A large number of individuals utilizes Twitter to promote their product or services, which usually works. Others uses Twitter to interact with tweets and stay informed on the latest news. As of today, Twitter has more than 320 Million active users. Business Problems or Opportunity Overview Although Twitter is the second best social media platform, the organization still faces some challenges. According to Conditt (2016), “Twitter has historically struggled to attract users and generate on the same levels as platforms like Facebook and Instagram”. Twitter’s profit and revenues are much lower when compared to their number one competitor, Facebook. Since the launch in 2016, Twitter has lost billions of revenues and is still struggling to develop any profits. However, Twitter’s operating costs are becoming expensive. This is one of the main reasons that the brand has not been succeeding at generating high level profits like Facebook. This problem affects the organization due to new users being unable to join the platform. In addition, “Such problems have forced previous internet gathering spaces to become defunct as savvy social media users chose to congregate on newer and hipper sites” (Matthews, 2016). Twitter will need to analyze their core problem to ensure an increase in revenue and the potential of users’ growth. Technology Solution Twitter faces solid competition when it comes to keeping people engaged into their platforms. In order for Twitter to remain its success, they will need to consider ways to differentiate themselves from competitors and develop a solution to the challenges they face. Twitter’s main source of income comes from advertising and marketing. Instead of investing a lot of money on operating Twitter, the brand should focus on what to do to keep the users that they currently have. A technology solution I feel will solve this issue is Collaboration Technologies. Collaboration technologies must help shape how work is performed, and enable teamwork that leads to better results, greater innovation and higher productivity (Cawog, 2019).
