Democratic Leadership:

democratic leadership— also known as participative, or shared, leadership. In this style, ALL members of a group participate in the decision-making process. While, in some cases, a supervisor or owner must make a final decision, everyone has equal say prior to the decision being made. According to the online resource Verywell Mind, www.verywellmind.com/what-is-democraticleadership-2795315, characteristics of democratic leadership include the following: • All members are encouraged to share ideas and opinions, even though the leader retains the final say over decisions. • Members feel more engaged in the process. • Creativity is encouraged and rewarded. Members of a group practicing participative leadership believe their leaders are honest and intelligent. They believe the leader will provide them with all the information prior to any discussion or decision being made. How often have you thought that a leader was withholding information from you just so they could feel important? Democratic leaders encourage creativity; they want their team to think outside of the box to look at the same issue with different eyes. How many times have you been told that many eyes see the same image differently? This is important if we are to grow as leaders and as a team.

As it states inAgarwal, S. (2020).Leadership style and performance of employeesLinks to an external site.

It is proven that democratic leadership and transformational leadership styles are significant for the banking sector which helps to achieve its goals and enhance the performance of employees.

Characteristics:

Democratic leaders encourage creativity; they want their team to think outside of the box to look at the same issue with different eyes. How many times have you been told that many eyes see the same image differently? This is important if we are to grow as leaders and as a team. Democratic leaders’ followers see them as competent and fair. This builds on the creativity of the team. If team members believe their leader believes in them and that they can be successful, then the team is free to grow.

Approach:

Another type of the leadership style is the democratic

leadership which is considered to be one of the

most widely considered leadership style across

the globe. In this type of leadership the other

employees are given the equal chance to contribute

to the decision making. The central position is held

by the leader himself but the decision making is

delegated to the subordinates in order to enhance

the contribution and association of the employees

with the organization (Cooper, 2015). The leader is

responsible for the final decision but the delegation

of authority is observed. It is noticed that employees

under such leadership style exhibit high level of

energy and ensure more efficiency while executing

assigned duties. (Koohang, Paliszkiewicz, &

Goluchowski, 2017). Such leadership promotes the

efficient and free flow of communication in all the

directions and from top to bottom, bottom to top

and in the vertical and horizontals manner as well.

Number of traits such as- fairness, creative nature,

courage, honesty and intellect are appreciated

when the qualities of democratic leaders are

assessed (Amanchukwu, Stanley, & Ololube, 2015).

Implementation: When you are a democratic leader and the style as read in these article it is encouraged to be a leader who encourages every member to participate so its importantLouisa encourages every member to be apart of the same team. It is also important she allows for all members to have their own opinions and discuss it openly not having things bottled up.

Build Leadership:Louisa could do to build leadership and managerial skills required to effectively manage her staff and business operations by implementing democratic leadership by crearting a relationship with her people by having open opinions, having a commitment to her people. Like it states in https://www.lifehack.org/869083/democratic-leadership

Leaders committed to the democratic leadership style understand that their organizations rise and fall with the people they have around them. And the best way to encourage employees to give their all is to listen to them and make space for their contributions. Leaders who embrace the democratic leadership style understand that they need not be the smartest person in the organization, the smartest person at all times, or the person with all the answers.

Adopting of approach:

How you adopt the approach of democratic leadership is with time and using that to your advantage. Its not something just to throw into but more so building it. Time is all for you.

Democratic leadership is distinct form positions of authority. Democratic leadership is comprised of 3 functions. Distributing responsibilities among the membership, empowering group members, and aiding in the group’s decision-making process. Democratic leadership regularly exchanges the roles of leader and follower. Democratic leadership can be distinguished from autocratic and laissez-faire styles (Gastil, 1994). Democratic leadership creates comradeship. Democratic leadership is a behavior that influences people that is consistent and conducive to the basic democratic principles and processes of inclusiveness and equal participation.

Adopting this democratic approach would greatly help the dysfunction of the team and the longevity of employees. The first change is the ability for the owner to recognize the needs of change and the lack of commitment and inability to look at strategies from a different lens or perspective. Effective communication would be a great way to begin the process of changes. Ethos is the ability to project a positive image and it is the quality of a much greater depth. This term directly impacts the basis of our character to the audience or the culture in which we are communicating the information (Barrett 2011). This term is often based on a similar term known as charisma. This term is described as one’s ability to persuade and connect. The idea of Ethos is the direct connection of the influence and how other perceives you as an individual. The owner has lost the trust of her employees, this understanding would assist her with influencing and building trust.

Strategic thinking allows individual to be able to set up a reality check of goals vs. priorities. This also promotes action step to take for achieving goals, which is the representation of precise path of strategy. A strategic leadership team possesses a strategic driver of innovation within an organization. A Strategic Leadership Team is the concept of people coming together and bringing multiple perspectives, different sets of data and information, and different experiences. Following strategic planning would be to recognize what motivates the team.

Intrinsic motivation is the idea of motivating self (Thomas, 2009). Intrinsic motivation provides an individual with a sense of meaning, choice, and a sense of competence. This motivation permits the individual to be recognized and permits the individual to feel as though they are part of a process. The rediscovery of purpose is the key to understanding and appreciating what it is that motivates an individual.

The final step would be professional development which creates new and profound knowledge. Professional development increases skills and builds an individual’s confidence and knowledge which in turn can create a rediscovery of purpose. Professional development demonstrates and creates an intuitive understanding of inner strengths and abilities. Professional development is the intuitive understanding of our inner strengths and abilities. Professional development promotes a mirror image of an individual, which in return creates an effective leader. Professional development is a great motivator for an individual, which may be the catalyst of a new view, and could be the intrinsic motivation for a team or owner.

Hello class,

Democratic leadership is a very participative leadership model where leadership is shared and individuals take a more active and participative role in the leadership of the group and decision-making process. It promotes inclusion and job satisfaction and commitment as well as innovation and creativity with decreased risks of single points of failure.

Democratic leadership allows the team members to actively participate, creating accountability and responsibility for outcomes. Louisa should step back and allow the rest of the team to speak and represent their ideas. They will begin voicing their ideas and when the team sees she's serious about taking their ideas and implementing them, they will feel like they have the ability to affect the outcome, creating more investment on their part. If she can step back and allow them to autonomously take on leadership roles complementary to their skills and as the team agrees is best, her work will then move to a more supportive and servant leader role of removing obstacles and strategically managing outcomes, rather than the in-the-weeds approach that typically tends to be more reactionary.

Louisa can begin to weave in democratic leadership with her team and begin delegating some tasks that individuals are interested in owning. Knowing that her team understands the interactions better than she does, she needs to trust them with customers and the outcomes. Certainly, lines can be drawn, but Louisa's more strategic approach allows them to be more tactical in how they handle their customers and own the solution and outcomes. If they make a mistake, they will own this more and carefully approach the next situation so as to modify the solution for a better outcome.

Through the process of handing over leadership, Louisa will find increased customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction. Positive experiences compounds with returning and new customers as well as devoted and committed employees. She can spend more time on strategic things like her offerings or a new location, etc. As she continues to hone her ability to listen and support her team over a command and control style, she will not only give opportunities to others, but she will see the teamwork, innovation, diversity, and other benefits of democratic leadership start to take place for an increase to her bottom line and a better and more inclusive working environment for all.

I agree to you that democratic leadership involves employees or team members at all levels in decision-making process. The leader will make sure that everyone is participative and provide inputs. This helps employees to feel valuable and heard. Democratic leadership can be divided into two categories: collaborative and consultative. Collaborative democratic leadership is about bringing the team members at common platform or consensus about a specific decision. The main idea behind it that even if each one of them is not agreeing to the idea, they will still support it. This is due to the fact that they were part of the whole decision-making process and knew how much effort it took to make the final decision. According to Pirsoul and Armoudian (2019) consultative democratic leadership seeks suggestions and information from the team members and as a result final decision is based on inputs given by them.
