What can make a novel difficult to understand is that the action of the novel may includeflashbacks(snipits of action/events that happened BEFORE the start of the story) which are revealed while the present action of the novel progresses. Separating past actions (flashbacks) from present actions (plot, rising action, climax, exposition, resolution) can help clarify meaning and give insight into a character's actions.

To help sort out the chronological progression of the action, create a visual illustration of the plot of the story that begins with the first action and progresses through the rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. In addition, create a separatevisualrepresentation of the flashbacks in the novel (if any). This may be done as:

  • a storyboard(a linear progression of events with pictures and captions)

  • a timeline

  • a comic strip

  • a mind map(use of a central visual image with events plotted along it or radiating from it)

  • a series of separate illustrations

  • another way of your choosing

Be sure to clearly label which is the present action(plot, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)visual and past action(flashbacks)visual. Whatever format you choose should includeat least 8 visual representations from the action. Each visual representation should be accompanied bydialogueor acaption. Be sure anyone viewing and reading your visual representation of the story will clearly see the order of events; you may want to number them for clarity.
