MASTERPIECE CAKESHOP, LTD. v. COLORADO CIVIL RIGHTS COMM’N
Introduction
An incident took place in 2012, where a couple with same sex visited a bakery in Colorado names Masterpiece Cakeshop to enquire about placing an order for their wedding reception cake. Owner of shop Jack Phillips denied crating cake for them stating the reason of him being in religiously opposition to such marriages of same sex. At that time, state of Colorado itself didn’t recognize such same sex marriages. To this, couple filed a charge alleging discrimination on basis of sexual orientation with the Colorado Civil rights commission in violation of the CADA i.e. Colorado Anti Discrimination Act.
Opinion of supreme court
Court’s opinion was delivered by Justice KENNEDY. He stated the case and mentioned that it was determined by the commission that the actions by the shop owner has violated the Act.
