The essay explores analyses and interprets how the two fashion magazines cover companies vary in meeting their purpose t
hrough an interpersonal, compositional and representational form. The aim of the study is to compare the cover pages of two companies to show the similarities and pattern followed by them to achieve their purpose. The essay interprets the texts from social- semiotic and meta-functional perspective.
Question:
A comparative analysis of Covers from two leading international fashion magazine companies: ‘Cosmopolitan’ and ‘Vogue’.

In Figure 1, the viewer is positioned to make a close contact with the image of Kristen Bell, the elements of the text are organized at the left and right side of the page in a longitudinal manner. The salient feature of the page includes the content to attract viewers towards the topics of most interest such as Losing weight and Sex. The whole ideation of the page is to orient the reader towards the aforesaid two topics. The representation process is conceptual without any vector, they don’t create any action. However, the invisible eyeline conveys a visual form towards direct address. It forms an image of the actor demanding that the viewer should pay attention to her while indulging in an imaginary relationship with her (Kress and Leeuwen, 2006, p.118). Narrative Action process is intransitive, non transactional and mental. Label lines are not ideation vectors because they do not lead to action.
The front cover page of Figure 1 features 3 articles at the left and 4 articles at the right. On the top left, the heading ‘50 tricks of sex’, below it the heading- gut feeling you should never ignore’ and the third heading ‘lose weight while you eat’ are appealing and try to influence the viewer to look inside the magazine. On the right side, the top head is about Kristen Bell while the remaining three are about sex and date.
In Sensory modality, the content and the layout of the page or the visual truth depicts an effect of pleasure. The actors chosen for the cosmopolitan magazines’ front page are generally the famous artist from movie or TV world about whom the public is enthusiastic and likes to read.

Figure 2 shows another famous artist Jessica Alba who was in news for her new movie ‘Good Luck Chuck’ and many others. The magazine tries to uncover her dorky side and get fit tricks. The page immediately attracts the attention and is completely filled by the headings related to date and sex.
The viewer is positioned to establish an eye contact with the actor and the layout of the page shows text at the left and right side of the page with photo at the centre.
