CAMBODIA ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
Drawing on (among other things) McLuhan’s metaphor of the ‘Global Village,’ Fawcett argues, in his book ‘Cambodia’, that the practices of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970’s are somehow being repeated or mirrored by elite groups in North America today. In this essay I will justify whether it is a reasonable parallel to make. Brian Fawcett elaborates in ‘Cambodia’, his furor against capitalism and the technology of mass communications as the decapitator of memory, imagination and all over civilization. He writes, “That puts me in the jungle, as an insurgent and as a guerrilla.” (61)
Fawcett is an absolutely educated individual who has proclaimed conflict on what he persistently calls the Global Village- that is, the boundless area of Western private enterprise, which uses broad communications to demolish human idea and personality and supplant it with "establishment industrialism."
