Introduction
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a se
lf-inflicted disease, which affects the lungs and it is caused by smoking of tobacco. Smoking is known to elicit an inflammatory response that causes obstructive airflow from lungs eventually leading to emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is fourth leading cause of death in the United States and accounts for a mortality of 125,000 Americans every year (NICE Guidelines, 2018). Although it sounds like a serious disease but it is preventable as well as treatable. Nursing care planning involves a proper treatment course to relieve the patients of symptoms and avoid further complications. Mostly nurses deploy a treatment plan and outlines all the instructions that a patient has to follow to understand the nature of the therapy.
Supporting the Situation (S) with a Nursing Theory
According to Blaha et al. (2018), nurses play an important role in managing chronic conditions of COPD patients. Nurses help in minimising the symptoms of patients thereby improving their quality of life. Holistic nursing assessment plays a key role in keeping the patient’s anxiety and depression levels in check along with cognitive behavioural therapy approach to help COPD patients manage their conditions. Nurses play a vital role in educating the patients on how to manage their disease and to understand the long-term nature of it. They train them on COPD self-management plans that includes inhaler medication, eating healthy, staying active and managing shortness of breath by practicing breathing exercises.
There are specialist nurses who are well equipped in delivering staff training and impart formal education and information to the other staff and carers as reported in Nursing Times by Gundry (2019). In the current days, many people prefer getting best of treatments from their homes, for which there are several care facilities, which provide with different nursing roles and specialist nurses, who are experts in their subject as well as manage COPD patients really well. As the disease progresses health of patient deteriorates and hence there is a need for constant ongoing surveillance that brings the patients in contact with nurses.
Background (B)
As reported by Agusti and Hogg (2019), although smoking is the underlying cause of this disease but a third of the patients suffering from COPD comes under non-smoker category caused by passively inhaling smoke from biomass fuels that is...
