What factors are likely to give rise to vigilantism?
    Vigilantism can be caused by a number of things, such as a lack of faith in the criminal justice system, the belief that the legal system is failing to protect residents, and a feeling of helplessness or irritation in the face of injustice or crime[footnoteRef:2]. Vigilantism can also evolve as a result of social and economic conditions like poverty and inequality.     Vigilantism is a complicated phenomenon that may be caused by many different things. Lack of faith in the criminal justice system is one of the most important issues. People may take issues into their own hands to protect themselves and their communities when they feel that the judicial system is ineffectual or corrupt. This may be especially true in places with high crime rates and insufficient police support. A sense of irritation or helplessness in the face of crime or injustice can also lead to vigilantism. Vigilantism is a tactic used by people to demand control over their lives and communities when they believe they cannot obtain justice through legal channels[footnoteRef:3].     The rise of vigilantism may also be influenced by social and economic variables. People may be more inclined to use vigilantism as a means of redress in places with significant levels of poverty and inequality. This may be especially true in areas where there is a feeling of social or economic exclusion. Additionally, groups with a strong feeling of social cohesiveness and a common set of moral standards may be more likely to experience vigilantism. These groups could be more prone to band together to fight perceived injustices and to embrace or condone vigilantism.
    It's also vital to keep in mind that the media's influence, particularly the overrepresentation of crime in the news, may be a factor in the growth of vigilantism. The suspicion of the system may be attributed to both the portrayal of crime and of justice, as well as the legal system itself. As a result, people may become vigilantes because they don't trust the government to provide justice in a timely and equitable manner. A sense of moral righteousness or the conviction that some forms of crime or injustice are not being adequately addressed by the judicial system can also be causes of vigilantism. For instance, vigilantes may act on their own behalf to punish those who commit hate crimes or to defend disadvantaged groups they feel are not receiving enough protection from the law.
    Politics or ideology can sometimes serve as fuel for vigilantism[footnoteRef:4]. In reaction to perceived threats to their way of life or to the ideals of their society, vigilantes, for instance, may decide to enact their own form of "law and order." Vigilantism may occasionally be employed to crush political opposition or advance a political cause. People may now organise and mobilise for vigilante action more easily thanks to the growth of social media and the internet. Online forums and chat rooms can offer a venue for people to share information and organise their activities, while social media platforms can be used to disseminate information and rally support for vigilante acts. It is crucial to remember that vigilantism may have detrimental effects on both people and communities. Vigilantism can threaten the rule of law and contribute to more turmoil and bloodshed[footnoteRef:5].
