It was in the 1940s, when victimology w
as born, that scholars began asking questions about victims' roles in the criminal justice system. Victimology is a branch of criminology that scientifically examines a person's relationship with an injured person, as well as the causes and nature of the consequences of their suffering. So began the emergence of victim support services. As a result, criminal victimization emphasizes the victims' financial damage as well as their psychological and bodily traumas. Only a few states allow victims to actively engage in the criminal justice system, despite statutes that describe victims' rights and their position in the criminal justice system. Most of the time, the victim's condition is left to conflicts between the state and the accused. It is said that the victim’s involvement in the criminal justice system was restricted and that they only engaged as prosecution witnesses by recounting what transpired. If given the chance, the majority of them would be willing to participate more. These people believed that if they participated in the judicial process, their emotions and thoughts would be incorporated into the case. In addition, the majority of victims believed that compensation and rehabilitation were necessary. They argued that crime had economic ramifications and that if the victims were paid, these ramifications might be lessened.
Role of the Victim
Knowledge of the role of victims in the criminal justice system requires an understanding of their involvement, the obstacles they encounter, and methods to improve their participation. To be sure, there are mitigating factors such as the victim's degree of education and how much of an impact their crime had on them that affect their engagement in the criminal justice system. Like many adversarial criminal justice systems, the law in the United States does not allow victims to have a say in their cases[footnoteRef:1]. Even though they are directly impacted by the crime, their only duty is to testify on behalf of the prosecutors.
