Introduction
Warehouse management is the daily administration of the operations which includes shipping of goods, receiving the arrived products, put away and picking for delivery of the goods. But, there is need for proper security of the warehouse in order to safeguard the goods against any kind of catastrophic events like burglary, vandalism, theft, pilferage, fire through a proper security management system. We will discuss on the various ways through which the warehouse can be safeguarded against the above disasters and help in the smooth business operation. We will also analyse the type of material which are prudent for warehouses and the costs involved with such installations.
Analysis
24 hour security protection - How many security officers do you recommend for this type of a facility
There will be two security officers who will be taking care of the 10 loading doors, 2 security officers for the 10 offices for the employees of the warehouse and one security officer each for the shipping and the receiving department. Also, there will be 2 more security officers for the 5 entry and exit doors which are just aside the dock door. Finally, for the 50 car parking lot there will be 2 security officers who will take care of this department. In all there will be 8 security officers required for the entire 200000 square feet warehouse facility of electronics store for the day shift. For the night shift as the number of transactions will be lower than the day, the number of security officers will be a total of 4. Total number of security officers will be 12.
The cost per officer for a full year; the total cost for the security staff; Salary for the security manager per year
The cost per officer for annually for the security officers for the 200000 sq feet warehouse will be $35 to $50 per hours. The hours of duty will be 10 hours during the day and 10 hours during the night. This totals to $35 x 10 hours x 12 securities = $4200 on a daily basis. Thus the annual cost of security for the warehouse will be $1512000 ($4200 x 30 days x 12 months).
The cost of the security staffs will be $10 per hour. There will be 15 security staffs recruited who will assist the 12 security officers. This will cost for the company $10 x 15 staffs x 8 hours x 30 days x 12 months) = $432000.
Apart from these there will be 2 security managers who will be in the day and night shift. The two security managers will be drawing a salary of $80000 annually and this will cost $160000 per year for the electronic warehouse company.
Fire system installed (number of pull stations, smoke detectors & control panels installed)
There will be 13 pull stations installed in all the internal and external entrances and exits of the warehouse. As per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) there is need of atleast one pull station for activating any fire alarm system. This will allow for automatic detection of fire and detection of smoke, heat sensors and water flow detection devices like that of a sprinkler. Therefore, as per the NFPA it entirely depends on the areas which need to be protected and the numbers of exits for installation of pull stations.
In warehouses in US often there is no requirement of smoke detectors. But, since the store is an electronic storage company will help to improve the overall fire safety design as the environment requires high value.
