Short Assignment #1
Assignment Description
For this assignment, you will take an evidence-based approach to answer the question: “Should Drugs
be Decriminalized?”
The purpose of the assignment is to critically examine the arguments “for” and “against” drug
decriminalization. You must use scholarly evidence to support/refute the arguments (i.e., not just your
or someone else’s “opinion”).
You may approach this from a broad-based perspective (i.e., not focused on a specific drug) or you may
focus on a specific drug or class of drugs; the choice is yours, but the focus should be made clear.
Note: The second course assignment is on the advantages and disadvantages of safe consumption sites.
While you may use as an argument that decriminalization facilitates the use of harm reduction options
(such as safe consumption sites), to avoid overlap between the assignments, do not examine the
specific pros and cons of safe consumption sites in this assignment.
Assignment Requirements
The assignment must not exceed 7 double-spaced pages in length (excluding title page and
references); this means you must be brief/concise. There is no minimum length requirement, but keep
in mind it is worth 15% of your total grade.
You must use at least five (5) scholarly sources to support your points “for” and “against”
decriminalization. For the purpose of this assignment, scholarly sources are defined as: peer-reviewed
journal articles, government reports (e.g., statistics, surveys, policy documents), other credible
organizations (e.g., Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Canadian Centre on Substance Use and
Addiction). Sources should be no more than 10 years old.
Note: Additional sources may be used to present “facts”, such as scope of problem, and definitions. This
type of source use will not count toward the five (5) required sources.
Do not use personal experience/examples, and do not present personal “opinions” based on experience.
You may (and should) present a thesis statement, which might well include a statement on whether
decriminalization of drugs generally (for specific drugs) is more/less beneficial, but this should be
presented in an objective tone and based on evidence (i.e., the source material), not your personal
opinion.
The assignment should adhere to APA format (7th ed) for title pages, spacing, pagination, in-text
citations, use of numbers and references.
The assignment must be submitted to Turnitin. There is zero tolerance for plagiarism.
