Should Drugs be Decriminalized?
The goal of drug prohibition was to lessen drug usage and the alleged problems that came with it. History has shown that it has failed on both counts and instead fueled a pandemic of drug overdose and poisoning deaths and produced a risky black market that supported high-level, international organised crime. Early in the 20th century, the idea of prohibition was developed and put into effect.
According to Canadian Drug Policy Coalition, to counteract more than a century of misguided policy that has killed more than 23,000 Canadians since 2016, a critical mass is finally emerging. Politicians, medical professionals, and senior public health officials are pleading with the federal government to decriminalise drugs in order to save lives and protect communities after realising that prohibition has done more harm than good. The necessity for a dramatic shift in policy away from criminalization and towards a focus on health and human rights is amply supported by the evidence.
According to Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, British Columbia, a province in Canada, recently legalised the personal possession of a little amount of hard narcotics. The contentious action aims to lower drug-related fatalities. Hard substances like cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and morphine that are in personal possession and weigh less than 2.5 grammes are no longer illegal. Due to this temporary exception, a person found in possession of a small amount of these narcotics won't have them seized, be detained, or be charged with any crimes.
Thus, this Assignment's goal is to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of prohibition. The phrase "prohibition" in the sentences that follow refers to the complete ban on the possession, use, sale, production, import, and cultivation of a certain class of narcotics. The total abolition of penalties for drug use and/or possession is referred to as "decriminalisation."
The phrase "partial legalisation" refers to regulations that permit certain normally illegal narcotics, such as heroin, to be provided to specific user groups, such as heroin-dependent individuals, by specific supplier groups, such as medical professionals. We start with the argument against prohibition since it is more well-known and simpler to make than the one in favour of it.
The cons of prohibition
One of the biggest problems with the prohibition against illegal drugs is the expense of enforcing it. Drug use is significantly more difficult when incapacitated, but there is no evidence that drug users' motivation to use illegal drugs is at all affected by being locked up. In fact, the research implies that incarceration has no impact at all (Spohn & Holleran, 2002). On the other hand, there is a tonne of proof that a criminal record or a history of incarceration can negatively impact someone's ability to find job and earn money in the future (Fagan & Freeman, 1999; Good, Pirog-Good, & Sickles, 1986; Hunter & Borland, 1999; Sampson & Laub, 1993).
