The aim of this assignment is to assess a national, state or community health promotion or health education intervention and critically review/evaluate its effectiveness in terms of its overall impact on the health behaviour and health status of targeted individuals and/or groups. The intervention does not need to be specifically focussed on diabetes, but it should be related to diabetes by way of reducing the risk for, or enhancing the management of diabetes.
Students need to choose a current or recent (within the last 5 years) national, state or community supported health promotion or health education intervention and critically evaluate its effectiveness in terms of its impact on the health behaviour and health status of targeted individuals and/or groups. (A community supported health promotion or education intervention relates to an initiative from your own local community and/or council area or regional area). Choosing a local program helps you to get a better sense of what is happening in your community and how health issues are being addressed.
It is recommended that the student review the intervention in a systematic manner that includes:
1. Setting the background context of the intervention, including who it is intended to arget and how and why they are ‘recruited’ into the program. Explain how this program could impact on diabetes.2. Critically detail the practical processes that led to the planning, resourcing and implementation of the intervention.3. Critically evaluate the findings and impact of the health intervention or program to date, on the targeted groups health behaviour and health status, including reported successes, limitations, barriers and opportunities.4. Critically review the potential for alternative or wider interventions that might ‘grow’ the original intervention.5. Summarise the intervention in terms of overall effectiveness, lessons learnt and relate this to diabetes.
