Assessment task 4: Research / evidence-based practice paper
Part 1
You are working as a registered nurse in a large metropolitan hospital. In the ward in which you work, nurses often express frustration with the handover process, which takes up a lot of time and does not always provide full or appropriate information. To address this, the Nurse Unit Manager has recently introduced a new handover tool to standardise the process of handover.
To evaluate the success of the tool, baseline data on nurse satisfaction with the handover process was collected via survey prior to the introduction of the tool, and again three months afterwards. Some of the results of this survey can be seen in the graph below.
1. Based on the data presented, do you think the standardised handover tool has been effective in improving the quality of handover in your ward? Why/ why not?
2. How might the data obtained pre and post the introduction of this tool be used by the hospital when reporting against National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standard 6: Communicating for Safety?
Part 2
The hospital is considering introducing bedside handover, to involve patients and their families in the planning of care. Based on current evidence, do you think this practice is beneficial? Why, or why not? Please refer to the highest possible levels of research evidence available to justify your answer
AT4 Frequently Asked Questions • Do I need an introduction and conclusion? Present a small introduction outlining what your paper is going to do. Remember not to use references in your introduction. An introduction tells the reader what the paper will do and how you will do it. Your conclusion should be a brief summary of what the paper has presented. Remember that both parts of this assessment are both aspects of evidence informed practice (EIP). • Can I use headings for part 1 and 2? Yes, you can. • Do I write in the first or third person? This paper can be written in first or third person, however, remember to stick to the same way for your entire paper. Please note that writing in the third person for assessments like this can be easier. • Do I need references for Part 1? For this section you need to link to the national Standards specific to clinical handover and quality and safety. As you will have literature for Part 2, you can reference a couple of these in your discussion relating to the data. • What do I need to do with the data from Part 1? You need to look at what it is telling you and present that. The data shows you questions that were asked staff about handover pre and post using bedside handover. What does the data say about bedside handover? Then align what you see with what the literature says about bedside handover. (You will already have literature to use for part 2, you should only need to reference a couple of research articles here). • In what way do I link Part 1 to the National Standards? Look at what the National standards say about clinical handover, look at the specific standard related to clinical handover. Then, link the activity the Nurse unit manager and the staff have done to try and improve handover processes to the national standard relating to clinical handover. • What is the best way set out Part 2? The first thing you need to do is find your high-quality evidence-based literature to formulate a discussion. Therefore: Identify your search terms. Use your Boolean operators to search your chosen database. As an example, I used the following search terms in CINAHL: Bedside handover AND Benefits limiting the age of papers from 2014-2020 I got 13 papers. (This is an example of how important it is to carry out your search with the terms that relate to your question and using the Boolean operators.) Identify the highest quality evidence to support your answer to the question for part 2. Remember from the tutes that the highest quality evidence is recent, is actual research (a research study) or a Systematic review. Please remember you can cite multiple research papers together if they are making the same point. For example: if you have 7 studies that show bedside handover does improve patient outcomes then cite them together to formulate your discussion. You do not need to conclude that bedside handover is or is not beneficial. You are presenting what the literature says therefore, if you also find literature that says there is not a lot of difference then in your discussion you can also state that some recent research suggests there is not a lot of difference and/or benefits. You are presenting what the highest quality evidence says about bedside handover. • Do I need to outline my search terms and search strategy for part 2? No, you do not need to do this. The type of evidence you present will be reviewed by the maker to see if it is recent and of high quality. Remember……….. Part 1 and 2 of this assessment looks at different aspect of evidence informed practice (EIP). Whilst they are both separate activities for the purpose of this assessment, they are both ways in which we adhere to evidence informed practice.
