Outline of Benner’s Theory
Individualised nursing care is a crucial factor for enhancing the quality of nursing care and it should be incorporated in the education as well as practice of nursing. Nurses play a crucial role in assessing as well as developing an individualised care for the patients (Delaney, 2018). Hence, in order to enhance the quality, perceptions and practices for nursing care, nurses require experiences so that the care is effective to be used in the nursing process as well as in classification system to assist the patients with better quality of nursing care (Walker-Reed, 2016). The Novice to Expert Model by Benner is one of the most useful and abstract structures, which assist the nurses in their professional development. The influential theory of Benner helps the nursing expertise and assists them in following the theory of the possession of skill developed by Dreyfus.
Five Stages of Clinical Competence
The novice to expert model constitutes of five stages of clinical competence. They comprise of the novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert stages of a nurse.
Novice Level
The initial beginner level in the model by Benner is the stage, in which the individual has had no preceding experience with any kind of clinical situation at hand. This is the level, where the new nurses are educated with various objective and simple features, which could be easily detected by them (Thomas & Kellgren, 2017). New or beginner nurses refer the theoretical knowledge of clinical practice as the domain specific facts, actions, characteristic features learned by the students, that are relevant to a certain expertise as well as the actions associated to it.
The nurses at this level usually possess limited experience with clinical practices as well as discussions regarding the care practices for patients seeking health care at hospital settings before they finish their graduation. These new nurses face various difficulties and constraints in order to perform the expertise of practices and processes on different patients encountering various clinical symptoms because the expertise learned as well as practised easily on any miniature or mannequin are usually stubborn as well as immovable.
Beginner Level
As the new nurse achieves expertise and knowledge related to the care practices, the nurse the proceeds towards the stage of the advanced beginner stage. Benner in his novice to expert model demonstrates the advanced beginner nurse as an individual who has been incorporated in way too much real situations so that the repeated component could be then detected much easily by the individual.
