Learning Activity #2

You are familiar with the importance of electrolytes and their impact on multiple body systems. The following reading and learning activity will help you focus your attention on some of the key electrolytes and the value of the kidney’s role in maintaining the electrolyte balance.

Willis, L. M. (eds.). (2020).Fluids and electrolytes made incredibly easy(pp. 21–36). Philadelphia: Wolters Kluwer-Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins.

In your own words, respond to the following questions in 250–500 words total for the whole activity.

  1. What is an “electrolyte”? What are the major intracellular electrolytes? What are the major extracellular electrolytes?

  2. “Osmolality” refers to the concentration of solutes within a solution. When osmolality is high, the osmotic pressure (or ability to extract water) of that solution is increased. Which electrolytes most impact serum osmolality?

  3. What “four factors” affect electrolyte balance?

  4. All electrolytes perform important functions, but for the purposes of this module, it will be helpful to limit your focus to those outlined below. In your own words, briefly describe the roles of the following electrolytes:

    • Sodium (Na+)

    • Phosphorous (PO4-)

    • Potassium (K+)

    • Calcium (Ca++)

    • Bicarbonate (HCO3-)

  5. Describe the role of the parathyroid gland in electrolyte balance.

Answer 1
Minerals found in the body fluids that carry an electric charge are termed electrolytes. When an electrolyte is dissolved in water (solvent), it conducts electricity. As informed by Yang et al. (2018), they perform various functions such as maintenance of fluid balance, pH regulation, muscle activity, heartbeat regulation, signal transmission and formation of various biomolecules.
· The electrolytes present in the intracellular body fluid called the cytoplasm are called intracellular electrolytes. Potassium, phosphate and magnesium represent the major intracellular electrolytes.
· The electrolytes present in the extracellular body fluids like interstitial fluid and plasma are called the extracellular electrolytes. Major extracellular electrolytes include sodium, chloride, calcium and phosphate.
Answer 2
Different solutes present in the liquid part of body fluid called the plasma are measured in terms of serum osmolarity. Serum comprises numerous electrolytes, including sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, magnesium and bicarbonate, that function as crucial elements for various body systems' functioning, including the nervous, muscular and cardiovascular systems. As stated by Wilson et al. (2020), the electrolyte, which primarily determines the serum osmolarity, is a cation called the...
