INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF HEALTH INEQUALITIES PRESENT IN RURAL AUSTRALIA
Australia has been well endowed with a large national population and substantial natural resources that make it a vibrant and sustainable community, yet the prevalence of a large number of local and regional populations concentrated in certain parts of Australia mark the population for a large number of inherent and genetic diseases. Many of these diseases are of the recessive nature meaning that the close proximity of a community, their geographical isolation, marked differences in their socio-cultural backgrounds and the ancestral inbred population makes them susceptible to certain diseases (Yates, 2015). This along with the impact of poverty in rural and remote areas of Australia has left the aboriginal population susceptible to many dieses. Reports published by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) found that the majority of the Australian population resides in the metropolitan cities while only 30% live in rural and semi-rural areas. Statistics also report that only 2.2% of the total Australian population actually lives in very remote areas. Among these 2.2, almost half the populations were identified to be of the indigenous tribes (Regional health: trends in inequalities in health and wellbeing by remoteness, for New South Wales, Australia, 2017). Recent statistics show that the indigenous populations were hospitalized more than 2.6 times than any average Australian citizen. Approximately 199 DALY was lost per 1000 people in the rural areas having the rate of disease burden to be more than 1.4 times than in metropolitan cities. The incidences of cancer in inner rural regions were 513 per 1000 citizens. Mortality rates also revealed a larger rate of 1.4 times in males and 1.8 times among females living in rural areas than in the cities. This is just bits of information that convey the amount of inequality among the indigenous population in Australia (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2019)
Several socio-economic factors play a role in these. Lack of education, lack of infrastructure of hospitals and clinics, lack awareness to common health and hygiene, poor housing and less availability of employment have had a significant impact on health. Among the many regional communities present in Australia, the Torres Strait Islander people have faced substantial impact and the Aboriginals that show a higher incidence of preventable diseases and unacceptable health conditions than the people living in metropolitan Australian cities do. The gaps in health and education between these rural communities and the common Australian folk have attracted the attention of many healthcare workers and doctors, who are now actively participating in improving the current state of the Aboriginals (Haney & Hopkins, 2012).
According to the reports published by the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, the differences in heath conditions are often an indicator of regional inequality that plaques Australia that arises due to inequitable allocation of health funding by the Australian Government and inequality in resource exacerbates found in these regions. Estimates put forward by the National Rural Health Alliance report of an astounding deficit of $2 billion in primary health acre every year in spite of the local regions having huge economic markets in fishery, agriculture, poultry, mining, forestry and...
