Introduction
The c
hallenges of the healthcare service providers are growing in the modern context, giving way to several new concepts to emerge in terms of getting suitable and durable both kind of employment on behalf of the healthcare service providers. Unlike conventional approach when healthcare professionals were subjected to serve in the host nation only, medical tourism is the new and quite popular concept among the healthcare professionals especially among the nursing professionals.
As mentioned by Chun Tie, Birks and Mills (2018), medical tourism or nursing migration has been put to assessment in Australian context in the last two decades. The need of the healthcare workforce especially the nursing professionals has increased by leaps and bounds and it has given way to the migration of nurses from developed and developing nations to Australia. The following paper examines the conceptual understanding of the medical tourism and its impacts on the Australian healthcare system in particular.
The Conceptual Understanding of the Medical Tourism
At first, it is significant to understand that the term medical tourism is driven from the concept of searching employment in healthcare sector but this search does not limit the boundaries of healthcare professionals particularly the nurses. Now days, the trend of migrating from the host nation to Australia is one of the popular trends, which nursing professionals prefer to other available alternatives. Thus, medical tourism is the process, in which nursing and other healthcare workforce migrates from their native places in hope of having better employment opportunities and secured future. As stated by Tie, Birks and Francis (2019), this concept is also popularised by the fact that there is a great need of nursing professionals in developed countries and Australia is one of such nations. In the last decade in particular, the demand for experienced and well-qualified nursing professionals has increased rapidly in public and private sector both. This shortage of nursing professionals is one of the main source points of migration.
Additionally, at the level of academics, the schools and institutions of nursing are not competent enough to provide full support to the internal healthcare network. In other words, migration of nurses is not only driven from the personal and professional interests of the overseas nursing professionals who wish to achieve good status at work but also it is taken from the internal shortage of the nursing professionals as the demands for the same increase every year. It puts extra burden over the existing nursing professionals, disturbing their work life balance (Smith, 2021). Thus, migration of nurses is more like factual and comprehensive way to provide support to the healthcare system in Australia. At the same time, this is also the question of investigation to have rationale for selecting Australia over other developed nations.
Rationale and Medical Tourism: An Australian Perception
In the context of reviewing the major factors behind the medical tourism and Australia, it is noteworthy here that the healthcare industry in Australia has rapidly marked its presence not only at national but also at international level. In both, public and private sector...
