Adverse drug reaction, and clinical significance of this reaction
An adverse drug reaction involves in the harmful or unwanted reaction that are experienced with the administration of a single drug or a combination of drugs under the normal condition. The adverse reaction is often needs to be discontinued or the dose needs to eb reduced. Often the adverse event can occur while the patient is taking the drug, irrespective of whether it is responsible for causing the adverse condition, the drug is often discontinued (Chung, Wang & Dao, 2016). Often, the side effects are caused instead of the intended therapeutic impacts which can be beneficial, harmful or at times neutral.
Drug toxicity is often categorised under the adverse impacts of drugs since the dosage of the drug often leads to plasma concentration that rises beyond the therapeutic range leading to intention or unintentional overdose of the drug. However, it is often observed that the that the adverse drug reaction are related with dosages (Kose, Akin & Cetin, 2017). But, nevertheless, there are other allergies and idiosyncrasies which are unpredicted. For instance, with the dose associated ADRs often there is a narrow therapeutic index like hemorrhage in case of oral anticoagulants.
Further, with ADRs leading to decreased drug clearance the patients are observed to have hepatic and renal functions due to the drug-drug interactions.
