Assignment Guidelines

Clear Introduction

o Provide a clear statement of intent and signpost the essay.

o Tell the reader what will be included in this essay and in what order.

o State why the topic is important to your field of nursing.

o Outline the importance of research in nursing, critiquing research and link to evidence based practice.

o Define key terms which are relevant to your essay – ensure the definitions are relevant to your essay content (e.g. if using quantitative research, ensure your definition relates to the type of studies and methodology you are discussing).

Body

o Critique the research paper using the framework provided by the module leader (see below) identifying strengths and limitations of the study in relation to believability and robustness:

Authenticity

o Writing style, author credentials, title, abstract

Robustness

o Research problem/purpose significance of study

o Literature review

o Study design/methods/philosophical underpinnings/theoretical framework/

aim/hypothesis

o Sampling

o Ethical considerations

o Data collection

o Data analysis

o Findings

In doing this you will be showing an understanding of the research process. Make sure that you support your discussion with relevant references, identifying any implications of the issues identified.

· Demonstrate that you have conducted an appropriate inspection of the literature related to this topic

· Summarise the significant findings, showing where this study fits in to the wider

evidence base on the topic. This will help you to demonstrate wider reading and should show that you have undertaken an inspection of the relevant literature.

Conclusion

· Conclude your essay by summarising what you have discussed throughout this essay in a logical order. Do not just repeat your introduction. Start this by giving an overall summary – what have you done – what have you shown, how is this relevant to current practice, where does this need to go from here?

Throughout, you need to demonstrate

· Evidence of original thought

· Succinct writing: keeping within the word limit (3000 words)

· Good presentation (see guidance below) with correct grammar and spelling

· Correct referencing –this should follow university guidelines:

Introduction
Various studies in the past have pertained to highlight the critical factors in nursing that are crucial in developing holistic models of care. In fact, the growth of healthcare sector over the course of past two decades has revolutionized how the work and functions both of nursing professionals should be seen (Hayward
et al, 2016). Apart from major interventions that these professionals bring in, their retention and turnover are two major determinants that are seemingly important to clinical studies i.e. the focus of work in general remains over enhancing the quality outcomes in system. The approaches to care are signified by the efforts made to develop integrated models of care but a detailed investigation of what nurses want on behalf of the system and how it should be addressed lingers behind. The following is the critique of a qualitative study of voluntary turnover of nurses from the perspective of learning new insights. Dana Hayward and other scholars take up the detailed investigation based approach, which leads to some effective conclusions.
Authenticity
At first, every research work is recognized upon the bases of the credentials it produces with a view to prove its relevance. The article entitled as “A qualitative study of experienced nurses’ voluntary turnover: learning from their perspectives” by Dana Hayward is authentic work of the scholars and there are some certain parameters to prove it. The article is written in the scholarly fashion; it follows the writing style of abstract, introduction, background, literature review etc that are generally acceptable norms of any research work (Roberts, Dowel & Nie, 2017). Secondly, the article is published in the journal of clinical nursing, which ensures that before being published, the article must have gone through several verifications. Its publication in a reputable journal makes the source of information presented in it verified and scholarly.
The nature and references made to the previous studies are other landmarks to judge the authenticity of any scholarly work and in this respect; the scholars have chosen to refer to the other scholarly works. The studies referred to support the present investigation of the study are all credible and published in the reputable journals. Thus, overall, the article is written in scholarly style and its authenticity is relevant (Roberts, Dowel & Nie, 2017).
Robustness: Research Problem
In the context of gaining critical perspectives from the article, it is noticeable here that the authors of the work have chosen to work on one of the crucial subjects to deal in nursing segment and that is to manage the turnover especially when it is voluntary. Nursing turnover has emerged as the issue for healthcare service providers because it creates gaps in the services; experienced nurses, when they switch their jobs, they leave behind gaps and positions that organizations have to fill in as quickly as possible (De Simone, Planta & Cicotto, 2018). The authors recognize that due to the nature of nursing as a work in disguise, the problem of turnover has increased over the past few years—there are specific references made to the previous studies here. At the same time, turnover relates staff shortage, lack of leadership and absence of effective performance, which hampers the process of developing good frameworks of care. Thus, voluntary turnover is the epic question, which is deemed essential to elaborate with regard to understand the causes and sources of the issue.
Literature Review
Theoretically, literature review is the section of any research study where the references to the previous studies are linked to the present topic. In other words, the review of literature is the process in which, empirical data—whether it is qualitative or quantitative—is chosen and it is analyzed further. The aim of the researchers in developing this section in their studies is to make sure that proper connections are justified and presented. For example, the nursing turnover is a clinical issue and the authors will take up previous studies to find out what aspects of these issues are already analyzed. They will seek connections with the previous studies to the present study only in the sense that how their selected references contribute to develop the present research work.
However, if seen from the broad perspectives of qualitative research paradigms, the article has no section as such i.e. literature review section is not available in this study. Instead, following the introduction, there is a background section in which, the projected state of voluntary turnover of experienced nurses, its theoretical stances as well as the sources of this clinical issue are projected and they are supported by the quality studies (Adams, Hollingsworth & Osman, 2019). It implies that the authors have given a complete rationale of selecting the issue and at the same time, there is a background for the readers to understand the context of the research study. However, at distinctive level, there is no presentation of the literature review in the body of the article, which can be considered as one of the major drawbacks/weaknesses of the study (De Simone, Planta & Cicotto, 2018).
Study Design, Sample and Method
As per the general observation of clinical studies, it is important to prioritize the study method because there is a variety of a topic available for the researches for them. Thus, based on the approach of the subject itself, it is important to finalize what study method fits into the criteria of the research work. Dana and other researchers of the present article use the qualitative research method to analyze the problems linked to the nursing turnover as the clinical issue. The rationale behind preferring qualitative study design is that qualitative studies can have textual presentations of the data; their focus stands right over the phenomena and they address the problem, its sources through the lenses of...
