A. Introduction
Theoretical orientat
ion refers to a customized approach while choosing any specific concept or theory. Theoretical orientation is highly dependent upon the level of comfort as well as the effectiveness of the concept for a specific individual concerning professional practice. Theoretical orientation facilitates the therapist’s or individual understands with the client because every client might react differently towards treatment.
This paper will discuss ‘existential-humanistic therapy’ as the selected theoretical orientation. Further, efforts will be made to present a descriptive analysis of this research along with some research-based evidences. This paper will conclude with potential strengths and weaknesses associated with the concept along training approach to facilitate its inculcation in practice.
B. Selection
Humanistic and existential approaches share a belief that people possess a capacity for self-awareness and choice. Selection of this theoretical orientation was based upon the fact that human nature is good and humans possess an inherent capacity to maintain healthy as well as meaningful relationships along with the ability to make choices, which might be in interest of oneself as well as others.
It would be essential to understand that ‘Humanistic and existential psychotherapies’ utilize a wide range of approaches towards case conceptualization, research methodologies as well as intervention strategies. Human experience is considered as a major focus under this approach rather than symptom, which complies with the personal belief and it could be considered as another major aspect for selection of this theoretical concept.
    I consider freedom and responsibility as two of the essential factors, which every individual needs in order to develop better understanding of society. Further, every individual possess an inherent capacity concerning responsible self-direction; therefore, this inherent capacity allowed me to distract myself from negative assumptions and attitudes. Thus, facilitated my path towards a broader approach and this could be relevant to many other individuals and is fostered by Humanistic and existential approach.
C. Description
As mentioned above also, humanistic approach focuses upon helping individuals to free them from disabling attitudes as well as assumptions, which could allow them to live life fully. Therefore, the therapist utilizing this approach focuses upon self-actualization and growth instead of curing diseases or alleviating any disorders. Further, the existentialist approach is more focused upon finding the philosophical meaning by choosing to function and think responsibly.
In other words, the concept of existential therapy consider that actual issues or problems faced by individuals is due to the prevalence or existence of loneliness, anxiety, despair, isolation and much more. On the other hand, free will, love and authenticity are considered as potential avenues facilitating transformation and allow individuals to live a meaningful life.
