Introduction
Mental health is of a serious concern concerning overall health of the individual and it is still one of the most neglected aspect in the society. Panic disorder and depression can be considered as two distinct mental health issues; however, it would be essential to consider that there exists a significant relation between both of the presented issues.
This paper will consider the presented case study of Freya and efforts will be made to present an effective therapeutic intervention. Further, this paper will also discuss personal skill development facilitated by use of therapeutic intervention and it will end with critique of the chosen intervention.
1. Synopsis of the Case Study
The presented case study is of a young teenage female, Freya who was diagnosed with major depressive disorder along with panic disorder. Further, Freya was having increased suicidal ideations with an intent and a plan, due to which she was admitted to the ward. Moreover, it is also evident from the case study that, Freya was engaged in n self-harm behaviours such as, cutting in the community settings, which was also a part of maladaptive coping strategy. Likewise, Freya also has a history of suicide attempt via strangulation. The case study also presents some of life stressors associated with Freya’s life, which include dysfunctional family, relationship breakdown with her boyfriend along with some body image issues.
2. Overview of the Therapeutic Intervention Used
Considering Freya’s current condition and her suicidal history, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) was the selected therapeutic intervention. Cognitive behaviour therapy is based upon the cognitive theory of psychopathology. It is considered as a psychosocial intervention with the major aim to improve mental health. It would be essential to consider that, CBT focuses upon challenging and changing cognitive behaviours as well as distortions along with improvements in emotional regulation. In other words, cognitive model describes individual’s perceptions or spontaneous thoughts concerning some situations along with their influence on emotional and behavioural reactions (Heslop-Marshall et al., 2018).
CBT is based upon the combination of basic principles of cognitive psychology and behaviour. It would be essential to consider that CBT is a different concept concerning historical approaches from psychotherapy, using CBT the therapist seek unconscious meaning behind client’s behaviours and then provide a diagnosis. Moreover, CBT is also presented as ‘action oriented’ and ‘problem focused’ therapy as it is used only for specific issues concerning mental health of an individual.
Therefore, the role of therapist, where CBT is used as an intervention, is to assist the client with practicing and finding effective strategies concerning identified goals and decreased symptoms of the disorder (Cunningham & Shapiro, 2018). In other words, CBT considers that, psychological disorders faced by the client are due to thought distortions as well as certain maladaptive behaviours and introducing the client to new information processing skills or coping mechanisms can help in the reduction of such symptoms.
3. Rationale for Utilising This Approach
As mentioned above also, CBT is a form of psychotherapy and is considered as an effective intervention in psychological disorders because it modifies thought patterns concerning the change in moods and behaviours. Therefore, its use is mostly based upon the consideration that, negative actions or feelings of client could be resultant from distorted thoughts or beliefs instead of unconscious forces from the past. Laws et al. (2018) mentioned that, CBT being a blend of behavioural as well as cognitive...
